A2 HIGHWAY - SALERNO REGGIO CALABRIA

… a challenging construction in a complex geological context …

3_edited.jpg

The design concerns the Salerno – Reggio Calabria motorway from km 139 + 000 to km 148 + 000 (lenght≈ 10 km). Along the route: n 3 bored tunnels (Serra Rotonda, Sardinia II and Costa Monte), n 1 cut-and- cover (Sardinia I) and n 4 viaducts (Caffaro, Piano Menta, Campo Galdo and Casale Civile).

The Serra Rotonda has a length of 3800 m and is the longest one of the Salerno-Calabria highways. It is a twin bore tunnel, an excavation area of 175 mq. At the north entrance, for an extent of about 600 m, there is a stretch that presented special challenges. It is characterized by the presence of a tectonized clay shale rock mass with poor geomechanical behavior and a large area with shallow landslide phenomena that are under-passed with a cover variable between 10m and 20m. A further difficulty was due to the possible presence of gas.

Andrea Antiga, as Soil’s Technical Director, signed the detailed design for the north stretch of the Serra Rotonda excavation and for landslide stabilization. He directed the detailed design for construction and the technical assistance during construction of the Serra Rotonda, Costa del Monte, Sardinia I and Sardinia II tunnels and of several external works. Pietro Coppola, as Soil’s Project Manager, was in charge for the main geotechnical and structural designs and numerical analyses.
